From the ALT

My name is Patrick Hennebery. I am from the state of New York and live in a town about an hour outside of New York city. I came to Japan as an ALT through the JET program. An ALT is an Assistant Language Teacher, which means I work in a Japanese High School as an English language teacher. This is the second time I have come to Japan. The first time I came to Japan was two years ago where I did a homestay in Tokyo for two months and took and intensive language class.

I teach at Mikata Highschool, which is a small school of about 600 students, between the cities of Obama and Tsuruga in Fukui, Japan. I feel very luck to be working at Mikata. Because the school is located in a rural area the students are very nice and welcoming and most of the teachers are very friendly and laid-back. I thinks this helps produce a very warm and relaxed atmosphere which helps to facilitate an environment where communication and internationalization can easily and freely occur.

I teach about 16 oral communication classes a week at Mikata High School. My job is two-fold. First, as a teacher, my job is to help and teach students as they try to learn English. As a native speaker of English, I am uniquely qualified to help the students practice and improve their oral communication skills, which is the main focus of my teaching and lessons with the students. Secondly, as a foreigner, I try to facilitate internationalization and cultural understanding. Because Mikata is in a rural area, many of the students might not otherwise have an opportunity to meet someone from a foreign culture. Therefore by interacting with and communicating my culture to the students and people living around me, They are able to broaden their horizions and learn more about the world around them.

    Things I do.

  • I teach about 16 classes a week
  • I belong to the English Conversation Club. A club that gives students a chance to practice their conversation skills outside of class, as well as allowing them to develop a deeper understanding of foreign cultures.
  • Once a week I work at Mikata's school store to give students the opportunity to practice the practical and useful skills of shopping in English.

As a foreigner, what do you think about Mikata High School

Mikata is, in my opinion, a great place to work.
