School Life

In this section are essays by Mikata High School students about various aspects of Mikata school life including school, students, and teachers. Please enjoy reading about Mikata School.

School Day

Mikata High School has seven classes in a day. One class is 50 minutes. Students have lunch time between 4th period and 5th period. We usually eat lunch during this time. Some students who don't have their own lunch go to the school shop and buy lunch. After school most students do club activities. This is a regular day in a Mikata High School student's life.

About the Students

There are about 550 students in Mikata High School. We all must wear uniforms, so we don't have to think about what we should wear everyday. We have seven classes in a day, so I am always sleepy in the last class. Out classes start at 8:20 in the morning and finish at 4:00 in the afternoon. However there are many students who belong to a club activity. They usually cannot get back home until 7 or 8 o'clock. Students in this school are always praised for greeting. It is like a custom that the students greet the teachers or some guest whenever they see them.

About the Students

Different schools have different types of students. They vary with their surroundings. For example, students in the city and students in the countryside are different in their lifestyles, their nature, what they like, and so on. I only know about students in Mikata High School so I will write on them.

Most students are sincere and friendly. Since they are generally kind, students can talk with almost anybody. Mikata is famous for students' greetings. They greet every teacer they meet. Some teachers may be greeted many times by one student in a day.

Generally speaking, the students at Mikata try to study hard and have good exam results. There are hardly any students who drop out of school. Except for special cases, students aren't allowed to get part-time jobs. So most of them practice away at their club activity. Students spend a lot of time on their club or studying.

Mikata High School students answered some questions about themselves for a student questionnaire. Here are some of the questions and results. There were a lot of themes and students were asked about many aspects of their life. The questionnaire was used to make the school miscellany. I will write about some of them. For example, one of the questions was what are you dedicated to: About 35% of students answered hobby, 26% answered club activity, 16% answered love, and 9% answered studying. Students were also asked what they wish they dedicated themselves to: 35% said studying, 25% said love, and 21% said hobby. A third question was what bothered students: 18% said grades, that is they wanted their grades to go up, 18% said lack of money, 15% said their future course, 13% said emptiness in their life--they seem to be feeling vanity about their life, and 10% said love. What students look forward to in a day in descending order was "time to talk to friends", "time to spend doing their hobby and amusement", and "time for sleeping." Average sleep time for students was between 6 and 7 hours. Study time was 1 to 2 hours.

These are a few examples but they are interesting. If you would like to know more about Mikata High School, please come and check out the Miscellany.

About the Teachers

There are 36 teachers in Mikata High School. Our school has 3 tracts of study: general education, home economics and computers, and a cooking/dietetic course. Because of this, some of the teachers are experts on foods and diet. All of the teachers treat their students as their own children. Therefore sometimes they may be strict. Most of the teachers also are advisors for the club activities. They come to school to coach the clubs even on holidays. Also, some of the teachers who work in the department called "Shinro-shido" are very busy. They counsel the students on their future. Sometimes they work at school until 10 at night.
